Prime Minister supports 5 in 5 plan with federal investment in New Brunswick Highways Plan

NEWS RELEASE
March 24, 2006
Fredericton, New Brunswick

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced an agreement with the Government of New Brunswick to refurbish New Brunswick highways that form part of Canada’s core National Highway System. This announcement supports the province’s plan to refurbish a range of routes as part of Premier Lord’s 5 in 5 plan.
In his remarks, the Prime Minister praised Premier Lord, calling him “a strong advocate for his Province.” And he gave the Premier full marks for his contribution to making this agreement a reality, citing his ability to work with both the federal government and the other Provincial Premiers.

Prime Minister Harper emphasized that this agreement embodies what he hopes will be even greater co-operation between the two governments, which should help build a brighter future for the province’s residents. And he noted that this agreement represents a good example of his Government’s new, more open approach to federalism, which fully respects provincial powers and takes into account their unique characteristics.

Canada will commit up to $200 million over the next 10 years to New Brunswick for cost-shared highway investments.
