Statement by the Prime Minister to mark the 20th anniversary of Rick Hansen's Man in Motion World Tour

August 24, 2006
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement to mark the 20th anniversary of the Man in Motion World Tour:

"Twenty years ago, Rick Hansen embarked on an odyssey that would inspire young people in Canada and the whole world through his courage and determination.

“Canadians remember Rick Hansen's athletic achievement between 1985 and 1987, in which he travelled 40,000 kilometres in a wheelchair, passing through 34 countries and four continents, to raise public awareness of spinal cord injuries, and the potential of persons with disabilities.

“During the Man in Motion World tour, $26 million was raised to support medical research and various initiatives. The tour also helped to break down barriers preventing persons with disabilities from participating fully in society.

“Rick Hansen is a remarkable symbol of perseverance, which can turn dreams into realities, and a model for all Canadians. His dream is still alive, and it still inspires us."
