Prime Minister announces Tax Court of Canada appointment

Ottawa, Ontario

The Right Honourable Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada, today announced the following appointment:

The Honourable Mr. Justice Gerald J. Rip, a Judge of the Tax Court of Canada, is appointed the Associate Chief Justice of the Tax Court of Canada. He replaces the Honourable D.G.H. Bowman, who was appointed Chief Justice of the Court in 2005.

Associate Chief Justice Rip received a Licence en droit (with distinction) from the Université de Montréal in 1965 and a Bachelor of Arts in 1962 from Sir George Williams University (now Concordia University) in Montreal. He was admitted to the Bar of Quebec in 1966 and to the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1973. He has practiced in both official languages with the Tax Litigation Section, Department of Justice in Ottawa (1968-1973) and with the Ottawa firm of Soloway, Wright, Houston & Associates in Ottawa (1973-1983) before his appointment to the Tax Court of Canada in 1983.

Associate Chief Justice Rip is the longest serving full-time member of the Tax Court of Canada. In addition to his court schedule, he continues to guest lecture on various aspects of Canadian tax law in law schools and universities across the country.

This appointment is effective immediately.
