STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER MARKING THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE RED RIBBON CAMPAIGN AND WORLD AIDS DAY

Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today extended his warmest greetings on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Red Ribbon Campaign and World AIDS Day:

“Canada has an important role to play in the efforts to combat HIV/AIDS and has been actively involved on both the international and domestic fronts. Globally, AIDS affects 40 million citizens, including millions of children orphaned by this disease. Here in Canada, HIV/AIDS affects thousands of Canadians.

“Canada’s New Government strongly supports universal access to treatment, care, and support and we recognize that everyone’s contributions are important in the fight to prevent and halt the spread of HIV/AIDS. The Red Ribbon Campaign has brought awareness to a new level, making the red ribbon synonymous with the fight against this disease. Over the past 25 years, this initiative has helped to raise much-needed awareness and funds, while concurrently demonstrating the dedication and selfless commitment of those organizations that provide assistance to individuals and families affected by HIV/AIDS.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people and organizations who have devoted their time, energy, expertise, and funds to combat HIV/AIDS.

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, please accept my best wishes for a successful and memorable event.”
