PRIME MINISTER CONGRATULATES TEAM CANADA ON GOLD MEDAL VICTORY AT WORLD JUNIOR HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIPS

January 5, 2007
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today congratulated the Canadian men’s junior hockey team on their victory today in the gold medal game at the World Junior Hockey championships in Leksand, Sweden.

“Like millions of other Canadians, I was glued to the television this afternoon to watch our outstanding young hockey players take on Russia in the gold medal match,” the Prime Minister said. “Our players thoroughly dominated their opponents and demonstrated the tenacity and determination that make Canada a hockey superpower.”

“These young men represent the best that our nation has to offer,” the Prime Minister added. “On behalf of all Canadians, I would like to extend congratulations to head Coach Craig Hartsburg, all of the coaching staff and the players for a job well done. You have done our country proud.”

The Government of Canada will formally recognize the team’s achievement in a ceremony at a date to be determined.
