PRIME MINISTER ANNONCES APPOINTMENT OF PIERRE DUCHESNE AS LIEUTENANT-GOVERNOR OF QUEBEC

Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced today the appointment of Pierre Duchesne as Lieutenant-Governor of Quebec.

"I am pleased with the appointment of Pierre Duchesne, who I know will be honoured to continue serving his province and country to the best of his abilities," stated the Prime Minister. "He served for 30 years in the Quebec National Assembly in addition to devoting himself to numerous social, community and professional causes."

Pierre Duchesne made his debut in the Quebec National Assembly in 1974. In 1984 he was named Secretary General, a post he held until December 2001 when he became Special Advisor to the Secretary General; he remained in that capacity until January 2004. Since 1974 he has spoken at a number of professional association meetings, as well as having published a series of articles in Quebec, Canadian and Commonwealth reviews on a variety of topics, including parliamentary security and procedure. Mr. Duchesne and his wife, Ginette Lamoureux, have three children: Nathalie, Dominique and Simon, as well as seven grandchildren.

He is also an Officer of the Ordre de la Pléiade, which was created in 1976 at the initiative of the Assemblée parlementaire de la Francophonie to recognize eminent persons who have distinguished themselves in the service of such ideals as cooperation and friendship within the Francophonie.

Pierre Duchesne is replacing the Honourable Lise Thibault as Lieutenant-Governor of Quebec. She has held the position since January 1997.
