STATEMENT BY PRIME MINISTER STEPHEN HARPER ON THE OCCASION OF SAINT-JEAN BAPTISTE DAY

Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper made the following statement today:

"Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day reminds all Canadians of the rich and vibrant experience that exists not only in Quebec but in the rest of Canada's Francophone communities. June 24 is an opportunity to celebrate the French language and culture, so courageously preserved which are a part of Canada's heritage.

This event reminds us that people in Quebec began celebrating Saint-Jean Baptiste Day well before Confederation. And next year we will be celebrating the 400th anniversary of the founding of Quebec City and of the Canadian State.

All Canadians can rejoice in Quebecers' pride at having preserved their unique identity within Canada.

I wish you all – Quebecers, Francophones and Canadians – a most wonderful Fête nationale."
