STATEMENT BY PRIME MINISTER HARPER ON HIS VISIT TO CHILE FOLLOWING MEETINGS WITH PRESIDENT BACHELET
July 17, 2007
Santiago, Chile
PLEASE CHECK AGAINST DELIVERY
President Bachelet and I just concluded an extremely productive meeting in which we discussed the success of Canada Chile relations, notably through a shared commitment to democracy and human rights and, as of this month, a decade of free trade and enhanced economic cooperation.
Canada is committed to the Americas and we see Chile as a key partner in this regard.
We have discussed Canada and Chile's strategic future, as partners.
Canada looks to Chile as a valued friend, with whom we hope to work closely on a range of issues.
Chile's commitment to democracy, social progress and sound fiscal management is commendable and should serve as an inspiration in the hemisphere.
Today we signed a partnership agreement between our countries that will provide a basis for future, expanded cooperation in many areas including energy, environment, climate change and agriculture.
This agreement commits us to working together in Chile, in the region, and at a global level in support of our shared values.
It will be our guide as we move our partnership forward.
We are also partners in the Haiti mission, which is so critical not only to the long-suffering Haitian people, but also to the security of our region.
President Bachelet, on behalf of our government, I would like to thank you and the people of Chile for your warm welcome and hospitality.
I look forward to seeing you in Canada in the near future.
