STATEMENT BY PRIME MINISTER HARPER ON THE PASSING OF THE PRIME MINISTER OF SAINT LUCIA

Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement on the passing of Sir John Compton, Prime Minister of Saint Lucia.

"On behalf of all Canadians, I wish to extend my deepest condolences to Prime Minister Compton's family and to the people of Saint Lucia. Sir John led his country to independence and had a major impact on all of the Caribbean. He was a leader in promoting cooperation throughout the region and in the Commonwealth and was instrumental in establishing key Caribbean institutions.

Canada's relationship with Saint Lucia and the Caribbean is deep and longstanding. We can pay tribute to Sir John's achievements by continuing to work hard to build a Caribbean community that is prosperous, secure and a model of democratic governance."
