STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA

April 13, 2008
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement today to congratulate Canada's men's curling team on their win:

"On behalf of all Canadians, I would like to congratulate Canada's men's curling team on capturing the 2008 World Men's Curling Championship after defeating Scotland in Sunday's final, in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Along with all Canadians, I am extremely proud of the outstanding and exciting performance by our men's curling team at the 2008 World Curling Championships. Their play throughout the tournament proved that Canadian players have the talent to compete and win against the best in the world.

I congratulate skip Kevin Martin, lead Ben Hebert, second Marc Kennedy, third John Morris, alternate Adam Enright and coach Jules Owchar. The victory gave Kevin Martin his first world title. With this most recent victory, Canada has now won the World Men's Curling Championship 31 times."

The next World Men's Curling Championships will be held in Moncton, New Brunswick, from April 4 to 12, 2009.
