Backgrounder: Churchill Airport pavement rehabilitation project

The Government of Canada is investing $13.4 million for a safety improvement project at the Churchill Airport. The project includes pavement improvements for airside surfaces including the taxiway and apron area, rehabilitation and upgrades to the runways and reconstruction of the airport terminal building entrance road. In addition, a runway gravel supply will be stockpiled for ongoing maintenance over the next 10 years. Preparatory work, including gravel crushing for future runway use started in the fall of 2009, and the remainder of the work will be complete by fall 2011.

Churchill Airport is a remote airport located about 1000 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba on the southwestern shore of Hudson Bay. The airport is owned and operated by Transport Canada,with year-round regularly scheduled passenger service. It serves as an important transportation hub for the north, including western Nunavut, and provides a gateway for tourism.
