PM welcomes Fifth Report of Advisory Committee on the Public Service

March 22, 2011
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today received the Fifth Report of the Advisory Committee on the Public Service, entitled A Public Service for Challenging Times.

The Report highlights actions taken as a result of the Committee's recommendations over the past four years to advance the renewal of the Public Service through improved recruitment, human resources governance, performance management and pay modernization.

"A strong and flexible Public Service is critical to Canada's competitiveness, especially in challenging economic times," said the Prime Minister. "I thank the Advisory Committee members for their observations and recommendations to strengthen the way federal employees serve Government and deliver programs to Canadians."

This year's report makes recommendations on how our Government should transform its business processes to achieve greater efficiency and better service delivery, maintain its long-term policy analyses capability and achieve the right balance between oversight and accountability.

The Advisory Committee is composed of nine eminent Canadians and is Co-Chaired by the Honourable Paul M. Tellier and the Honourable David Emerson. It was created in 2006 to advise the Prime Minister and the Clerk of the Privy Council on the renewal and future development of the Public Service.

The Fifth Report is available at the Privy Council website http://www.clerk.gc.ca/fifth
