Prime Minister Stephen Harper made the following remarks at the Deauville G-8 Summit:

"First, I'd like to thank President Sarkozy, who has been a gracious host throughout this summit.

"At this meeting, leaders agreed that international coordination is essential to address remaining economic risks and maintain growth not only for Canada but also for our
partner countries.

"Our deliberations built on the success of our meeting last year in Muskoka. All leaders are united in moving forward with the Muskoka initiative on Maternal, Newborn and Child Health.

"Wide-ranging discussions dealt with the situations in the Middle East and North Africa, and with challenges such as the protection of religious freedom and the rights of women.

"With respect to a democratic future for Libya, G-8 leaders agreed that Gaddafi must go.

"Together with Tunisia and Egypt, we launched the Deauville Partnership to support democratic and economic development.

"By working together, G-8 countries are continuing to provide leadership to make our world more secure and prosperous."
