Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on the death of former Brazilian President Itamar Franco

Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on the death of Itamar Franco, former President of Brazil:

"I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former President Itamar Franco.

"Itamar Franco played a key role in Brazil's transition from dictatorship to the model democracy it is today. As President during the Plano Real – a major national anti-inflationary program – he made key decisions that gave Brazil economic stability and paved the way for its current success.

"On behalf of all Canadians, Laureen and I offer our deepest condolences to his family and to the people of Brazil."
