May 25, 2008
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement regarding the election of Michel Sleiman as President of Lebanon:

"Canada wishes to congratulate Michel Sleiman on his election as President of Lebanon. He brings to office tremendous experience and the confidence of the Lebanese people. Canada supports President Sleiman and the Government of Lebanon in facing the challenges ahead, which include ensuring stability, security, economic growth and the full implementation of all relevant UN Security Council resolutions, such as the disarmament of all non-governmental groups.

Canada stands ready to assist the Lebanese government in any way possible. The election of President Sleiman and the agreement signed last week in Doha give us hope that Lebanon is moving in a positive direction."
