Backgrounder: Nanaimo cruise ship terminal

Canada's Economic Action Plan
September 8, 2010
Nanaimo, British Columbia

The $22-million Nanaimo cruise ship terminal project will be jointly funded by the Government of Canada and the province of British Columbia. Each level of government will contribute $8.5 million under the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund (ISF). The remaining $5 million will be provided by the Nanaimo Port Authority, which has agreed to cover any costs incurred after March 31, 2011.

The Harper Government is supporting the Nanaimo cruise ship terminal through its $4-billion ISF, part of Canada's Economic Action Plan. The ISF supports provincial, territorial, municipal and community infrastructure projects that are construction-ready, creating jobs and providing short-term economic stimulus.

Construction continues on the new cruise ship terminal in Nanaimo, British Columbia, which will allow the floating dock to handle the direct berthing of the largest cruise ships travelling along the West Coast routes. A welcome centre and Canada Border Services Agency inspection facility are also under construction.

As part of Canada's Economic Action Plan, the $4-billion ISF is supporting close to 4,000 infrastructure projects across the country. Since March 2009, over 400 projects across British Columbia have received a total federal investment of over $500 million under the ISF.

Under Canada's Economic Action Plan, the Government has commitments in place for almost 16,000 projects across the country, and has contributed to the creation of nearly 400,000 net new jobs since July 2009.
