Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on the 20th anniversary of German reunification

October 3, 2010
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement to mark the 20th anniversary of Germany's reunification:

"Twenty years ago today marked the historic reunification of the former East and West Germany.

"During this tumultuous time in our history the world watched with awe and inspiration as the Berlin Wall came down, signalling the end of the Cold War and paving the way for a new era of peace, stability and freedom for a unified people.

"This remarkable achievement of reunification proved to be a positive and stabilizing force not only for Europe but for the entire world. The German people have accomplished so much since that historic date. Their drive and determination have helped to make Germany the economic powerhouse it is today, and a true leader in the international community.

"On behalf of all Canadians I extend my warmest wishes to Germans as they celebrate 20 years of unity, justice and freedom."
