Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada
October 17, 2010
Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement to recognize the canonization of Blessed André, born Alfred Bessette:
"Today Brother André was formally declared a Saint by Pope Benedict XVI in Vatican City.
"Brother André's canonization affirms the significant devotion he showed during his lifetime to helping the sick, destitute and all those in need.
"Through the moving ceremonies we witnessed at St. Peter's Square today, the Roman Catholic Church is recognizing a great Canadian, who from humble beginnings reached the Church's highest reverence through his humility and dedication to serving others.
"His devotion to St. Joseph, the patron saint of Canada, led to the construction of the magnificent Saint Joseph's Oratory on Mount Royal.
"Brother André's canonization is an important inspiration to us all, and the Oratory will continue to serve as a central landmark of spiritual strength and faith for Quebecers and all Canadians."
