Prime Minister of Canada marks Eid al-Fitr – the end of the holy fasting month

August 30, 2011
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement to mark Eid al-Fitr:

"On this important occasion, Muslims in Canada and around the world mark the end of Ramadan by celebrating Eid al-Fitr – known as the Festival of the Breaking of the Fast, which is also the start of a three-day feast.

"In communities across Canada, Muslims celebrate this time of joy and compassion with their families and friends by gathering to pray, give to the less fortunate and exchange gifts.

"Canadians are proud to live in a nation which embraces cultures and religions from around the world, a country where we learn from one another and work together to build a more peaceful, prosperous and united Canada.

"Our country is home to a vibrant community of more than 500,000 Muslims, who play a vital role in enriching our diverse society and helping make Canada stronger in all areas of endeavour. The end of Ramadan is a time to reflect on their contributions.

"On behalf of all Canadians, I offer my most heartfelt wishes for health and happiness to all those celebrating Eid al-Fitr.

"Eid Mubarak."
