Prime Minister Stephen Harper took part today in the Opening Ceremonies of the 20th edition of the Arctic Winter Games, a sporting and cultural extravaganza that brings together athletes, coaches, performers, and spectators from across the circumpolar region.
"These games were designed to showcase and celebrate the very best in Arctic sportsmanship and culture and this year marks their thirty-eighth year. The games and the athletes and performers who participate in them are stronger and better than ever," said the Prime Minister.
The Arctic Winter Games is a week-long celebration of Arctic sportsmanship and culture. Contingents from Northwest Territories, Yukon, Nunavut, Northern Alberta, Nunavik, Greenland, Russia / Yamal-Nenets, Alaska, and Sami compete in 18 different sporting events and cultural showcase events.
"This unique event continues to unleash the cultural and athletic potential of the true north," said Prime Minister Harper. "This year's theme, Northern Stars-Inspired by Dreams, speaks to the limitless potential of the North and the promise of a bright future."
