STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER ON CANADIAN FORCES DAY
June 1, 2008
Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement on the occasion of the 7th annual Canadian Forces Day:
"On Sunday, June 1, 2008, people across Canada come together to celebrate the outstanding men and women of the Canadian Forces. Canadian Forces Day provides us with a special opportunity to show our gratitude and to recognize the dedication and professionalism of the Canadian Forces personnel who stand on guard 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, defending our freedom and sovereignty. These brave Canadians are to be commended not only for their exemplary and selfless service but also for being outstanding representatives of our great country when they serve abroad.
We also extend our gratitude to military families and loved ones for their tremendous contributions and sacrifices. They lend their strength to the men and women in uniform.
In Canada and across the globe, our Canadian Forces play a vital role in protecting Canadians and promoting the values we hold dear: freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
We are especially thankful to the Canadian Forces members serving abroad in Afghanistan and on other vital missions around the world.
Canada's role in the United Nations-mandated mission in Afghanistan was recently extended by Parliament and our men and women in uniform are responding to this challenge and continue to do all Canadians proud on the international stage.
Rebuilding Afghanistan after decades of strife and turmoil is a long-term undertaking that requires patience and commitment. Canada, in large part due to the determination and valiant efforts of our Canadian Forces members, is making a real difference in the lives of Afghans.
On behalf of the Government of Canada and all Canadians, I want to express my appreciation to all Canadian Forces members. We owe them a debt of gratitude and support.
