PM announces Canada to contribute to strengthening Ukraine's economy and institutions

Lviv, Ukraine

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced that Canada is increasing its support for economic and justice reforms in Ukraine through six development projects.

"Ukraine is a valued trading and investment partner that is taking important steps to further strengthen its economy and institutions," said the Prime Minister. "The new funding announced today will provide expert Canadian advice and training in these areas while strengthening commercial links between the two counties."

The new funding will support six projects that are: strengthening the capacity and efficiency of the Ukrainian State Customs Service, which will make it easier and more predictable to do business with Ukrainian firms; helping design and deliver regional job training programs related to trades; supporting economic growth and development in local municipalities; improving regional and national economic development planning; and strengthening Ukraine's juvenile justice system.

The following Canadian organizations will partner with Ukraine in delivering this additional assistance: the Canada Border Services Agency, the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology, the Association of Canadian Community Colleges, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, the Conference Board of Canada, the Canadian Urban Institute, and Calgary's Agriteam Canada.

Ukraine has been identified as a priority country for Canada in the provision of development assistance.
