Release of the Cohen Commission's Interim Report into the Decline of Sockeye Salmon in the Fraser River

The Government of Canada today welcomed the release of the Interim Report from the Commission of Inquiry into the Decline of Sockeye Salmon in the Fraser River entitled Fraser River Sockeye Salmon: Past Declines. Future Sustainability?

"On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to extend my appreciation to Justice Bruce Cohen and his staff for their dedication and hard work in putting together this interim report" said Prime Minister Harper. "This inquiry is one of the many measures our Government is taking to help ensure the sustainability of Canada's fisheries."

In accordance with the terms of reference, the interim report being released today sets out the Commissioner's preliminary views on, and assessment of, any previous examinations, investigations or reports deemed relevant to the Inquiry and the Government's responses to those examinations, investigations and reports.

Justice Cohen was appointed as Commissioner of this Inquiry under Part 1 of the Inquiries Act on November 5, 2009. The interim report of the Commission can be found at http://www.cohencommission.ca.
