Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on Thanksgiving

October 8, 2010
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement on Thanksgiving:

"Thanksgiving is a time when Canadians gather with family and friends to celebrate, give thanks and to volunteer in their communities. It is also a time when we can put our busy lives on pause and enjoy the best of the fall season.

"Community is at the heart of Thanksgiving. On this weekend, I know many Canadians will be giving their time to help those less fortunate. By doing so, you are showing the generosity and acceptance that has made Canada such a wonderful country in which to live.

"And, as we do every year at this time, we should give thanks to the men and women of the Canadian Forces who are serving away from home, especially in Afghanistan. They sacrifice this time of celebration, family and friends to ensure that families all over the world can experience the freedom and security that Canadians treasure.

"On this Thanksgiving, Laureen and I, along with our children Ben and Rachel, wish all Canadians a very happy Thanksgiving."
