PM announces increased humanitarian support for Libya

March 25, 2011
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced further assistance for the people affected by the crisis in Libya.

"Tens of thousands of people have been displaced and are in need of humanitarian aid as a result of actions taken by the Libyan regime," said Prime Minister Harper. "The support being announced today will help foreign workers stranded at Libya's borders return to their home countries."

Through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the Government is immediately providing nearly $3 million to support the efforts of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to address the repatriation of people displaced into neighbouring countries.

This is in addition to the $5 million in humanitarian assistance that the Government announced on March 2, 2011 for the people of Libya.

Today's announcement raises Canada's total humanitarian assistance to the crisis in Libya to almost $8 million.

The development assistance being announced today is one of several measures that the Government is taking, in concert with the international community, to help address the current crisis in Libya.
