STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA

May 6, 2008
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement today on the death of a Canadian soldier in Afghanistan:

"I would like to offer my most sincere condolences to the family and friends of Corporal Michael Starker, who died today in Afghanistan. Our thoughts also go out to his comrade who was injured in the same incident. Our prayers are with them during this difficult time.

Our Canadian Forces are making immense sacrifices. They are working to bring security and democracy to the people of Afghanistan, while also protecting and promoting Canadian values. Corporal Starker made the ultimate sacrifice and his efforts will remain a source of pride for all Canadians.

We take comfort in the fact that, along with our allies, we are making a difference in the daily lives of the Afghan people. We stand proudly with our Canadian Forces members and offer them our full support as they ensure the necessary security conditions for the people of Afghanistan to rebuild their country."

Corporal Starker was a member of the 15 Field Ambulance, based out of Edmonton.
