Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement on the occasion of the closing of the IXth Paralympic Winter Games in Turin, Italy.

"I want to extend my congratulations to our Canadian athletes and coaches, who have worked so hard over the course of the Paralympic Games to achieve their best performances and who have represented Canada so well on the world's stage.

"Throughout these Games, you have demonstrated what can be achieved through consistent effort, dedication and conviction. You are true role models for all Canadians and I salute you.

"The closing ceremonies mark the beginning of Canada's Paralympiad and in four years' time Canada will welcome the world to Vancouver and Whistler. The Government of Canada is a proud partner in the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

"As we begin to shift our focus from this team's outstanding achievements at these Games to planning and preparing to host the world in 2010, we look forward to once again supporting you in your competition against the world's best.

"All of Canada is proud of you, and the Government of Canada, with our partners, is pleased to continue to support our Paralympians as you work toward even more success in the future."
