Statement by the Prime Minister on the death of Trooper Mark Andrew Wilson

October 8, 2006
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on the death of Trooper Mark Andrew Wilson:

“It is with great sorrow that I have learned of the death of Trooper Mark Andrew Wilson, who was killed in the line of duty while helping the people of Afghanistan. On behalf of all Canadians I wish to express my heartfelt condolences to his loved ones.

“Canadian soldiers had recently supported the Afghan government in forcing Taliban insurgents from this area so that the local community could return. Trooper Wilson was conducting a patrol so that the reconstruction and development phase of this operation could continue. He was killed when his armoured vehicle was hit by an Improvised Explosive Device.

“There is no doubt that Trooper Wilson represented the best of our military and our country. His family and friends can be proud of the fact that this courageous Canadian sacrificed his life for a greater cause.

“In contrast, the indiscriminate acts of violence by insurgents are indicative of an absolute lack of regard for the people of the region. We will honour the memory of Trooper Wilson by remaining steadfast and determined to help Afghans achieve lasting stability and security.“
