STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER ON THE RESULTS OF THE ELECTION IN THE NORTHWEST TERRITORIES

Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on the results of the selection of the Premier of the Northwest Territories:

"On October 17, 2007, the members of the Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly selected Floyd Roland as Premier of their territorial government. On behalf of the Government of Canada, I extend congratulations to Premier Roland and I wish him success in tackling issues of importance to the people of the Northwest Territories.

Canada's Government is committed to helping the North finally realize its true potential as a healthy and prosperous region within a strong and sovereign country. To this end, the Government is developing a northern strategy and will continue to work with the three territories on Arctic sovereignty, resource regulation, climate change, devolution, and other issues of importance to northerners."
