Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada

September 7, 2010
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement on the death of Claude Béchard:

"I learned with sadness this afternoon of the death of Claude Béchard.

"Mr. Béchard devoted a significant part of his life to active politics. For the last thirteen years, he had been an effective member for Kamouraska–Témiscouata and devoted himself to his constituents while holding important positions in the Quebec government.

"Struck by illness, he never gave up and was an example of courage and determination for people who fight cancer.

"On behalf of my family and the Government of Canada, I wish to convey my heartfelt condolences to his family, his spouse, his children and to his loved ones during this difficult time."
