STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA

April 10, 2008
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement today to congratulate Canada's national men's sledge hockey team:

"On behalf of all Canadians, I congratulate Canada's national men's sledge hockey team on winning the gold medal at the recently completed 2008 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships in Marlborough, Massachusetts, U.S.A.

We are all proud of the outstanding efforts of our national men's sledge hockey team. Our athletes are an inspiration to all Canadians. These men have overcome physical disabilities and have demonstrated talent and dedication to become world champions.

This victory at the 2008 IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships has earned Canada its second gold medal in the four times this event has been held since 1996. The triumph also follows a gold medal performance at the 2006 Paralympic Games in Turin, Italy, and the 2007 World Sledge Hockey Challenge in Kelowna, British Columbia."
