PRIME MINISTER HARPER CELEBRATES CANADA'S 140TH BIRTHDAY ON PARLIAMENT HILL

"Canada's potential is as limitless as our boundless Arctic"

Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Minister of Canadian Heritage Beverley J. Oda celebrated Canada Day with the thousands present on Parliament Hill today and invited all Canadians to join in celebrations being held in communities across the country.

Canadians have many reasons to celebrate Canada's 140th birthday. "The economy's strong, our country is more united than we've been in decades and Canada's back as a vital player on the world stage," the Prime Minister added.

Recalling his visit to Alert on Ellesmere Island last year, the Prime Minister called the Arctic a source of inspiration for Canadians. "The vast gleaming expanse of the Arctic is as limitless as the potential of Canada itself," said the Prime Minister.

"From Cape Spear to Vancouver Island and up to Iqaluit, Canadians are proud to be part of a country that is rich in history, culture, and achievements," said Minister Oda. "Although thousands of kilometres may separate us, we share traditions and values that have brought us closer together for 140 years."

Canadians from across our great country who will be celebrating in Ottawa will take part in Canada Day ceremonies and activities taking place on Parliament Hill today.

"On behalf of my family, Laureen, Ben and Rachel, and on behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish you, your friends and your loved ones, a happy Canada Day," concluded the Prime Minister.
