STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA

August 24, 2008
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement on the occasion of the closing of the XXIX Olympic Games:

"On behalf of all Canadians, I want to congratulate our athletes and their coaches who performed to the very best of their abilities throughout the Beijing Games. Canada's athletes rose to the occasion, providing exciting and memorable moments, which included personal bests and new national records. Canadians watched your outstanding performances with great pride and excitement, and we salute you.

Canadians share a strong passion for sport. From the playground to the podium, the values we learn from sport—teamwork, discipline, and confidence— are values that represent the very best of what it means to be Canadian.

Today I, like all Canadian Sports fans, am looking back with pride at the many memorable performances of our fellow Canadians at the 2008 Olympic Games. Now, we look forward to watching the performance of our paralympic athletes who will soon have their turn to live their Olympic dream."
