Prime Minister lauds the accomplishment of Aboriginal Canadians on National Aboriginal Day

Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today paid tribute to the contributions of Canada’s First Nations, Inuit and Métis people at an event marking National Aboriginal Day.

The Prime Minister took part in a wreath-laying ceremony at the National Aboriginal Veterans Monument in Ottawa, where he honoured Aboriginal Canadians who served in Canada’s military. More than 7,000 First Nations, Inuit and Métis people are estimated to have served in the Canadian armed forces during the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War.

“All Canadians take pride in the accomplishments of our Aboriginal veterans,” the Prime Minister said. “Their courage and commitment to the cause of freedom will be remembered as long as our nation endures. They serve as role models to a new generation of Aboriginal soldiers, sailors and aircrew who currently serve our country.”

The Prime Minister also praised the current generation of Aboriginal Canadians who are making their mark in all areas of Canadian society as entrepreneurs, business professionals and artists.

“These young men and women are proud of their heritage and also have their eyes fixed firmly on the future,” the Prime Minister stated. “I honour their vision and commitment to excellence as they strive to fulfill their dreams in the 21st century.”
