Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on flooding in Manitoba

May 8, 2011
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on flooding in Manitoba:

"Earlier this evening I spoke with Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger regarding the heavy floods that have hit the province this spring.

"At the request of the Government of Manitoba, our Government is sending the Canadian Armed Forces to help ensure the safety of those affected by the floods.

"The City of Brandon, Manitoba, declared a state of emergency today, and water levels on the Assiniboine River continue to rise. Our troops will work with local officials there and in other impacted areas of the province to assist Manitobans in need and evacuate those in harm's way.

"I know Manitobans will show the resolve and courage they have demonstrated in the past when facing great adversity. Our thoughts and prayers are with the residents of Manitoba as they endure the devastating effects of these floods.

"On behalf of all Canadians, I hope for an early end to the flooding and a return to safe conditions."

Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on Mother's Day

May 8, 2011
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement to mark Mother's Day:

"Laureen and I would like to wish mothers across Canada a happy Mother's Day – a day when we honour and celebrate their strength, guidance and compassion.

"Mothers are the anchors of our families, dedicating themselves to being our most important role models, nurturers and teachers. Motherhood involves passing on the values and life lessons our youth need to become outstanding Canadians.

"As we pay tribute to our mothers, including those who are no longer with us, we should take a moment to consider the sacrifices they have made for us.

"Our Government recognizes the importance of supporting mothers both at home and abroad. We are showing true leadership on the world stage by taking tangible and practical measures to support maternal health and save the lives of women and their children in the developing world, where the need for action is especially urgent.

"As Canadians celebrate Mother's Day, Laureen and I wish all families health and happiness in the coming year."

Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on Victory in Europe Day

May 8, 2011
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement to mark the 66th Anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (V-E Day):

"Today we honour our brave Canadian soldiers who fought to achieve the Allied victory in Europe during the Second World War against a fascist regime rooted in racism and hatred that scarred the world with the Holocaust.

"Sixty-six years ago today, Allied nations accepted the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany.

"Leading up to that historic day, hundreds of thousands of Canadians left behind their families, friends and hometowns for the battlefields of Europe to defend the fundamental values that all Canadians cherish dearly - freedom, democracy, the rule of law and human rights. Hundreds of thousands of other Canadians laboured tirelessly on the home front to produce the war material needed by our soldiers in uniform as well as by our allies.

"These Canadian heroes put the welfare of our great country, and all future generations, ahead of their own. They continue to represent the best of what it means to be Canadian — courage, self-sacrifice, standing up for what is right, and protecting those who cannot protect themselves. More than forty thousand of these selfless Canadians never returned home. For this, we owe our veterans and their families our deepest respect and gratitude. Their actions make us all proud to be Canadian.

"As we remember the triumph of May 8, 1945, we also pay tribute to our brave men and women in uniform as they continue this important tradition today — in Afghanistan, Haiti, Sudan and other regions of the world where Canadians are truly making a difference.

"Lest we forget."
