Prime Minister announces Barbara Hagerman as Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island

July 12, 2006
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper was pleased to announce today the appointment of Barbara Oliver Hagerman as the newest Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island. “Barbara Hagerman is a talented musician who, in her role as teacher and performer, has made a considerable contribution to Prince Edward Island. Over the decades, she has demonstrated the level of dedication and commitment needed for this important position. Her appointment is good news for the Island,” said the Prime Minister.

Ms. Hagerman began her career as a music teacher in Summerside and Charlottetown. Ms. Hagerman has also had a distinguished performance career on the Island, including serving as a vocal soloist with the P.E.I. Symphony Orchestra. For 17 years, she was also the conductor of the Summerside Community Choir, which, under her leadership, performed throughout the Maritimes, as well as at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

In addition to her music career, Ms. Hagerman has devoted her energies to volunteer work. Over the years, she has volunteered with the P.E.I. Music Festival Association, the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals, and served as an adjudicator with music festivals in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador. Ms. Hagerman’s volunteer efforts have also extended to helping seniors and children with special needs.

Ms. Hagerman holds a degree from Mount Allison University, where she specialized in voice and organ. She and her husband, Nelson, have two children, a son, Kurt - who lives in the Cayman Islands with his wife, Rupal, and two children, Kyle and Asha - and a daughter, Brynne, who lives in Vancouver. Ms. Hagerman does have family closer to home; her mother, Alice Oliver, lives in Summerside.
