Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement on the closing of the XVIII Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia:

“I want to extend my congratulations to our Canadian athletes and coaches, who have competed with so much success during the Commonwealth Games. Our Canadian team excelled on the world’s stage and delivered many outstanding and inspiring performances.

“The Commonwealth Games are a significant event that unites 71 nations in a spirit of sport excellence, friendly competition and the full integration of athletes with a disability. Canada’s participation in these Games and in the Commonwealth movement demonstrates our support for these values internationally.

“Although the Games have concluded, our athletes will continue to carry this spirit of the Games and will remain positive examples of how sport can improve all our lives.

“Canada has had the privilege of hosting the Games in the past and looks forward to earning the opportunity again in the future. Congratulations to Melbourne and Australia for hosting a successful Games.”
