STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER FOLLOWING THE DEATH OF THE MAYOR OF QUEBEC CITY, ANDRÉE BOUCHER

August 24, 2007
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement upon learning of the sudden passing of Ms Andrée Boucher, Mayor of Quebec City:

"I was deeply saddened to learn of the sudden death of Mayor Andrée Boucher. On behalf of the Government of Canada and my family, I wish to express my sincere condolences to her family and loved ones, and to the residents of Quebec City.

Throughout her political career, Ms Boucher demonstrated extraordinary leadership. She was a visionary and an ardent defender of the interests of the residents of Ste-Foy and later of Quebec City. Ms Boucher had unparalleled political savvy and had tremendous integrity. She never hesitated to place constituent's interests above all other concerns.

Today we have lost an exceptional partner who devoted so much of her time and energy to organizing the festivities for the 400th anniversary of Quebec City's founding. Quebec City residents and Canadians will remember her hard work to make the 400th anniversary of the founding of Quebec City a world-class success."
