PM commemorates Canadian and Allied soldiers who served during the Korean war

November 11, 2010
Seoul, South Korea

Prime Minister Stephen Harper attended a ceremony at the War Memorial of Korea in Seoul today to honour the Canadian and Allied soldiers who fought to defend South Korea against a North Korean communist invasion from 1950 to 1953.

The Prime Minister met with Canadian veterans of the Korean War before laying a wreath in front of the Canadian plaque at the Gallery of the Monuments of Those Killed in Action.

"Today we honour and remember those members of the Canadian Forces who fought in one of the toughest wars in our history, to defend South Korea against an oppressive communist invader," Prime Minister Harper said. "Our forces fought bravely alongside our Allies to defend South Korea and played a pivotal part in ending the hostilities."

More than 26,000 Canadians served in the Korean War with 516 making the ultimate sacrifice with their lives. Another 7,000 were active in theatre between the cease-fire and the end of 1955.

"Today I also want to pay tribute to our brave men and women in uniform who continue the proud tradition of defending peace and freedom around the globe in places such as Afghanistan and Haiti," the Prime Minister added.

PM announces Canada fulfills commitment to replenish African Development Fund

November 11, 2010
Seoul, Korea

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced that Canada will support economic and social development in Africa by replenishing the African Development Fund in keeping with its G-20 commitment.

"By supporting the African Development Fund we are fulfilling a commitment made at the Toronto G-20 Summit," said the Prime Minister. "Development assistance to Africa is an ongoing priority for Canada, and replenishing the Fund helps the African Development Bank continue to play its role as the leading African development institution."

Established in 1972, The African Development Fund contributes to the promotion of economic and social development in 38 least developed African countries by supporting projects and programs, as well as technical assistance for studies and capacity-building activities. The Fund is administered by the African Development Bank. Canada supports the Fund's priorities of infrastructure, governance, regional integration and support for fragile states. It places special emphasis on African private sector development, food security and agricultural productivity, and the incorporation of climate change adaptation and mitigation into the Fund's work.

In the Toronto Summit Declaration, Prime Minister Harper and the other G-20 leaders committed to ensure an ambitious replenishment for the concessional lending facilities of the multilateral development banks, including the African Development Fund.
