STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA

January 7, 2008
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement today on the death of two Canadian soldiers:

"I would like to offer my deepest condolences to the loved ones of Warrant Officer Hani Massouh and Corporal Éric Labbé, who died yesterday in a tragic vehicle accident in Afghanistan. The loss of these two dedicated Canadians, whose hard work contributed to bring peace and stability to this war-torn country, will not be forgotten. They deserve the gratitude of all Canadians for their commitment and the work they performed on our behalf.

The brave men and women who represent Canada in Afghanistan face considerable risks in bringing security, democracy and self-sufficiency to the people of this country. These soldiers were participating in an operation to continue stabilization efforts in Kandahar Province - efforts that facilitate further reconstruction and development.

Warrant Officer Massouh and Corporal Labbé made an important contribution to the lives of the people of Afghanistan. The Government of Canada stands proudly with our Canadian Forces members as they pursue their important work of protecting Canadians, our interests and our values - both at home and abroad."

Warrant Officer Hani Massouh and Corporal Éric Labbé were members of 2e Bataillon, Royal 22e Régiment, based out of Valcartier, Quebec.
