The Red Friday Ladies

February 15, 2011
Ottawa, Ontario

Since it was first raised on Parliament Hill in 1965, the Canadian flag, with its distinctive maple leaf, has been recognized and respected both at home and around the world as a symbol of peace, democracy, freedom and justice. The product of a collaborative effort by talented Canadians, including Mr. John Matheson and Dr. George Stanley, Canada's national flag was adopted on February 15, 1965. It reflects the courage and determination of all Canadians, including our hard-working men and women in uniform, who have worked together to build this great country.

On this, the 46th anniversary of the Canadian Flag, Prime Minister Stephen Harper will celebrate National Flag of Canada Day with a new tradition – presenting Peace Tower flags to worthy Canadian patriots.

This year's honourees are Lisa Miller and Karen Boire. Dubbed "the Red Friday Ladies", Lisa and Karen spearheaded a movement in support of Canada's dedicated men and women in uniform by encouraging Canadians to wear red on Fridays – a simple expression of respect and appreciation.

What began as a posting on the Internet, evolved into a show of support for members of the Canadian Forces and their families. After crafting an e-mail and sharing it with friends and media, Lisa and Karen's initiative took off.

Their first Red Friday Rally in 2006 drew thousands of proud supporters clad in red to Parliament Hill. The pair has since hosted, attended and inspired countless events throughout the country and continue to spread the word about the importance of Red Fridays.

Over the years, the two women have been well-recognized for their work. Most notably, they have received a Canadian Forces Medallion for Distinguished Service in 2007 and have been named Chamber Citizen of the Year 2008 by the Upper Ottawa Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Lisa and Karen will celebrate 5 years of Red Fridays with a rally in Petawawa on May 6, 2011.

PM pays tribute to outstanding Canadians on Flag Day

February 15, 2011
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today will celebrate National Flag of Canada Day with a new tradition – presenting the Peace Tower flag to two worthy Canadians, Lisa Miller and Karen Boire.

"Our Canadian flag represents the ideals of freedom, democracy, and justice – it's these values that are upheld each day by the brave men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces, and their family members – like Lisa and Karen – who support them as they do their heroic work."

Dubbed "the Red Friday Ladies," Lisa Miller and Karen Boire spearheaded a grassroots movement in Canada in support of our hard-working men and women in uniform – a simple expression of respect and honour by wearing red every Friday.

They hosted the first, and largest, Red Friday Rally in Canada in September 2006. Since then, they have attended and hosted countless other events, and continue to spread the word about the importance of Red Fridays.

In honour of Flag Day, Prime Minister Harper will express his gratitude, on behalf of all Canadians, by presenting Lisa and Karen with the Peace Tower flag – a tradition that will continue every year with worthy Canadian patriots.
