PRIME MINISTER HARPER ISSUES STATEMENT ON THE RETIREMENT OF JUSTICE MICHEL BASTARACHE

Today, Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement on the retirement of Justice Michel Bastarache from the Supreme Court of Canada:

"On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to thank Justice Michel Bastarache for more than a decade of service to the Supreme Court of Canada.

"Throughout his life, Justice Bastarache has shown leadership in private practice, legal education and public service. His advocacy for official language rights, his commitment to teaching the common law in the French language, and his record of considered appellate judging have contributed to his strong reputation. I wish him well in his future endeavours."
