PM participates in Take Our Kids to Work Day

November 3, 2010
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper spent time today showing Melanie Renn, a grade-9 student from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, how he serves the people of Canada, as part of the national Take Our Kids to Work Day.

Melanie earned the opportunity to meet the Prime Minister by winning the Ultimate Dream Job Contest organized by The Learning Partnership and Scotiabank. As depicted in her winning photograph and short essay submission, Miss Renn's ultimate dream job is becoming an archaeologist.

"I was pleased to share part of my day with Melanie," said Prime Minister Harper. "Take Our Kids to Work Day provides a great opportunity for young people to learn more about what their parents do for a living and to think about what they might want to accomplish in their future careers."

Melanie met with Prime Minister Harper at 24 Sussex this morning before travelling with him to Parliament Hill, where he gave her a tour of his Centre Block office. Miss Renn also attended Question Period after which she spent time with the Speaker of the House.

The Take Our Kids to Work initiative was created in 1994 by The Learning Partnership, a national charitable organization dedicated to strong public education in Canada. Through the program, students shadow a family member or volunteer at their work, allowing the young people to explore possible careers. Each year, approximately 250,000 students participate in about 75,000 workplaces across Canada.

Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on resignation of Gordon Campbell

November 3, 2010
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement:

"On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to thank Premier Gordon Campbell for his devoted service to British Columbians, and indeed his service to all Canadians. Through his considerable efforts, Premier Campbell has returned British Columbia to prosperity and has re-affirmed his province's rightful place in the heart of our Canadian Confederation.

"In particular, I would like to thank Premier Campbell for his steadfast support during the current global economic downturn and for his government's tremendous cooperation in implementing Canada's Economic Action Plan.

"On a more personal note, I would like to once again thank Premier Campbell for his tireless efforts in promoting British Columbia and Canada during the Vancouver-Whistler 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Canada and her athletes had no better champion, or more ardent supporter than Gordon Campbell. My enduring memory of Gordon will be with his arms raised cheering our athletes, his hands covered with those famous Canada mittens while passionately waving the Canadian flag.

"I wish Premier Campbell every success as he leaves public life. I am sure he will continue to sing British Columbia's and Canada's praises wherever he next goes."
