Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada

September 5, 2010
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement on Governor General Designate David Johnston's first official audience with Her Majesty The Queen:

"Today, Governor General Designate David Johnston was in Balmoral, Scotland, for his first official audience with Her Majesty The Queen. This important meeting marks another step on the path to his installation as The Queen's representative in Canada.

"During the audience, Mr. Johnston was invested as Commander of the Order of Military Merit and Commander of the Order of Merit for Police Forces. Mrs. Sharon Johnston was also invested as a Companion of the Order of Canada. These are significant Canadian honours and I am confident that they will be held with dignity and grace.

"I congratulate both Mr. and Mrs. Johnston on this important milestone and look forward to David Johnston's installation as Governor General in the coming weeks."
