STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA ON NATIONAL ACADIAN DAY

August 15, 2008
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement today:

"Today all Canadians have the opportunity to appreciate the history and achievements of Canada's Acadians.

"The pride Acadians have in their rich and distinct heritage is matched only by the confidence they have in their future.

"Acadia's history has helped shape that of Canada. The French presence in North America owes much to those early Acadian settlers who showed an unwavering commitment to pass on their culture, language and traditions to their children. We see that same pride and determination from today's Acadians as they ensure that their unique culture continues to thrive for generations to come.

"On this festive day, I invite all Canadians to celebrate the remarkable contribution of one of Canada's most remarkable communities. The Acadians have always been an important contributor to our Francophone community. Today, we salute them for all their many contributions to Canada's cultural diversity and quality of life.

"On behalf of the Government of Canada, have a memorable Acadian Day."
