STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA ON THE DEATH OF A CANADIAN SOLDIER IN AFGHANISTAN

March 17, 2008
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement today on the death of a Canadian soldier in Afghanistan:

"I extend my deepest condolences to the loved ones of Sgt. Jason Boyes who was killed yesterday in Afghanistan. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this very difficult time.

Sgt. Boyes was an exceptionally brave soldier who deserves the support and gratitude of all Canadians. A well-respected member of the Canadian Forces, he made the ultimate sacrifice for his country and the people of Afghanistan.

The mission in this region of Kandahar province is part of a larger effort aimed at helping the people of Afghanistan reconstruct and redevelop their country.

The Government of Canada is extremely proud of the contribution our Canadian Forces members are making in Afghanistan. The mission is a difficult one, but we are committed to bringing security and stability to this war-torn country so that future generations may enjoy the benefits of a peaceful and democratic society."

Sgt. Jason Boyes was a member of the Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI), based out of Shilo, Manitoba.
