Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada

August 21, 2010
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement on the 100th Anniversary of the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE):

"It has been 100 years since Canada's seventh Prime Minister, Sir Wilfrid Laurier, opened the first PNE. In that time there has been little the Exhibition hasn't seen – from livestock displays to rockets and aircraft, world-class musicians and even a wedding – the PNE has had it all.

"The PNE is a place where British Columbians, Canadians and visitors from around the world come to celebrate British Columbia and create memories that last a lifetime. But more than that, it's a place whose development has mirrored the growth and changes of its province and its country. It welcomes the world and throws a spotlight on the best that B.C. and Canada have to offer.

"On behalf of all Canadians, I congratulate the PNE on its 100 years of captivating and delighting visitors and wish the Exhibition well in the century to come."
