STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA

September 11, 2008
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement today following the death of former senator and constitutionalist Gérald-A Beaudoin:

"Born on April 15, 1929, this eminent specialist on the Canadian Constitution and human rights led an illustrious career. He left his mark on the University of Ottawa, where he taught in the Faculty of Civil Law before serving as the Dean from 1969 to 1979.

He was appointed as a Conservative senator in September 1988, and published numerous articles and law texts, in addition to translating the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

A great constitutionalist and ardent promoter of bilingualism and Canadian unity, he was also the head of the Centre for Human Rights from 1986 to 1989, and co-chaired the Special Joint Committees of the Senate and the House of Commons on the amending formula (Beaudoin-Edwards Report) and constitutional renewal (Beaudoin-Dobbie Report).

On behalf of all Canadians and the Government of Canada, I extend my sincere condolences to Gérald-A Beaudoin's family and friends."

STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA

September 11, 2008
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement today to mark the seventh anniversary of 9/11:

"The tragic events on September 11, 2001 brought home the very real and destructive consequences of terrorism. We take this day to remember the lives lost in this terrible tragedy, including the 24 Canadians who were killed on that day.

We also take this day to celebrate the power of the human spirit and recognize the strength of those who have survived. We also recognize the heroic efforts of police, paramedics, and emergency personnel who responded to the call and helped those in need.

September 11, 2001 is a reminder that the threat of terrorism - to our values, our institutions, our lives - is very real. The Government of Canada remains vigilant to this threat and will continue to take action to ensure the security of Canada and the safety of all Canadians."
