Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada

August 31, 2010

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement on the death of John Rowswell, Mayor of Sault Ste. Marie:

"I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of John Rowswell after a long battle with cancer. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and the people of Sault Ste. Marie.

"Trained as an engineer, John was first elected as mayor in 2000 and re-elected in 2003 and 2006. That John was due to celebrate his tenth anniversary as mayor of Sault Ste. Marie is a testament of his service to and love of his community, as well as his community's respect for him.

"Laureen and I extend our condolences to his wife Donna, his four children and numerous grandchildren. He will be deeply missed."
