Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on Thanksgiving

October 8, 2010
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement on Thanksgiving:

"Thanksgiving is a time when Canadians gather with family and friends to celebrate, give thanks and to volunteer in their communities. It is also a time when we can put our busy lives on pause and enjoy the best of the fall season.

"Community is at the heart of Thanksgiving. On this weekend, I know many Canadians will be giving their time to help those less fortunate. By doing so, you are showing the generosity and acceptance that has made Canada such a wonderful country in which to live.

"And, as we do every year at this time, we should give thanks to the men and women of the Canadian Forces who are serving away from home, especially in Afghanistan. They sacrifice this time of celebration, family and friends to ensure that families all over the world can experience the freedom and security that Canadians treasure.

"On this Thanksgiving, Laureen and I, along with our children Ben and Rachel, wish all Canadians a very happy Thanksgiving."

Backgrounder: Alberta Centre for Advanced Microsystems and Nanotechnology Products

October 8, 2010
Edmonton, Alberta

The Federal Government, through Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD), is contributing to the Alberta Centre for Advanced Microsystems and Nanotechnology Products (ACAMP). The investment will help ACAMP acquire specialized equipment that will support additional microsystems and nanotechnology (MNT) growth opportunities. It will also help ACAMP extend its marketing and business development, product development, and packaging and assembly services.

Today's investment of $1,950,000 builds on two previous investments in ACAMP and brings total WD funding to $8,950,000.

Support is being provided through the Western Diversification Program (WDP) which focuses on promoting increased economic activity that improves the viability, prosperity and standard of living for individuals and communities across Western Canada.

ACAMP's mandate is to provide a path to commercialization for microsystems and nanotechnology products from established firms, small start-up companies and researchers on a fee-for-service basis. The organization provides services in three areas of commercialization: marketing and business development, product development, and packaging and assembly.

ACAMP's services bridge the gap for researchers, small start-up companies and established firms that have a potentially viable product. They provide the help needed to develop these products into a profitable business opportunity.

To date, ACAMP has more than 60 companies who are clients that access its services and equipment.

PM announces investment in Alberta's high-tech sector

Investment will promote innovation and help bring new products to market
October 8, 2010
Edmonton, Alberta

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced funding for Alberta's high-tech sector that will promote innovation and help bring new products to market. The investment in the Alberta Centre for Advanced Microsystems and Nanotechnology Products (ACAMP) will help promote growth and increase opportunities for Western Canadian firms. He was joined at the announcement by Lynne Yelich, Minister of State (Western Economic Diversification), and Mike Lake, Member of Parliament for Edmonton – Mill Woods – Beaumont and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Industry.

"Microsystems and nanotechnology make possible products that are smaller, faster, stronger and less expensive than ever before," said Prime Minister Harper. "Our Government's support will help bring new ideas from the lab to the marketplace while supporting small businesses and helping to create high-tech jobs."

The Government will provide support to ACAMP, a not-for-profit organization that provides specialized business services to microsystems and nanotechnology (MNT) clients. The investment will help the organization acquire and install new equipment needed for growth, as well as extend its marketing and business development, product development, and packaging and assembly services.

Nanotechnology deals with matter at the molecular or atomic level, and involves the development of technologies within that size and scale. The worldwide market for products incorporating these technologies is expected to exceed $3 trillion by 2015. The investment announced today will help Western Canadian firms compete for a larger share of that market.
